The Traditional English Restaurants of London

Your guide to English restaurants in London

The English Garden

This is situated in a row of pretty Chelsea terraced houses, just off the Kings Road.

In a slightly similar fashion to the fact that the Kings Road had its heyday in the 1960s, so did this restaurant in the 1970s, when it was considered quite a trendy hangout by the Chelsea set.

The English Garden has always boasted a loyal following for its agreeable British fare, and its supporters rate the quality of its cuisine, whilst the attractive, cosy conservatory is popular to dine in.

But the well-known chef, Richard Corrigan, of Lindsay House fame, has recently taken over the English Garden, and as a result there have been many changes.

The interior has been refurbished and lost some of its comfortable fustiness, to be replaced by a harmless and dull beige; but, more importantly, the cooking is now of a much higher standard.

With brilliant and inventive starters like crab on shredded fennel or poached egg with oxtail gravy, allied to some traditional English mains, the whole place has moved onto a new culinary plane. Try it before the prices inevitably increase.
