The Traditional English Restaurants of London

Your guide to English restaurants in London

Veronica's

This is situated just off the newly trendy Notting Hill area, and is a genuine one-off place, something that is rare to find in such a cosmopolitan city as London.

It is personally run by the owner, who regular diners find so charming and welcoming that she has her own fan club, separate from that for the restaurant.

Careful research into past English culinary history has produced many delicious, and intriguing, gems that this small – but enchanting – establishment specialises in. The eclectic menu comes in for great praise, as being quite fascinating in its own right, some would say more interesting than the results, though that is being a bit unfair.

Featured dishes might include a starter like Roman chargrilled tuna with 14th century beans - marinated raw tuna with oregano mustard seeds, almonds, dates and rosemary renders a piquant sweet and sour combination drizzled with basil, mint and ginger and served with beans in ginger, cinnamon and coriander.

They state that "Historical note: we found many Roman recipes for marinated raw fish all of which were tantalisingly exciting in combinations of fresh herbs, honey, vinegars and fruits but this delicate tuna recipe won our vote and here we have teamed it with a 14th century English recipe for beans or 'Benes' as it was known."

Or their famous ‘Twice Roasted Duck’ with Mrs Acworth’s renowned bacon sauce. This dish originated from approximately 1720, accompanied by a savoury sauce of bacon, ginger, fresh sage and garlic and served with sweet potato rissoles of the era.

More details on dishes from their Menu are available on Their Website.

Foreigners find it particularly appealing, and couples think it is romantic – something really different for everyone.
