Odin's
Odin's has been a long established regular on the London scene. Some years ago a young, impoverished Irishman named Peter Langan went to work there and married the boss's daughter - the rest is history.
Peter had superb taste and was an exceptionally inventive restaurateur, and before too long Odin's began to be recognised by the food guides, and also became extremely popular and successful.
He then went on to create a whole series of others eateries, eventually forming a partnership with Michael Caine and Richard Shepherd (former Head Chef at The Capital Hotel in Basil Street for many years), the most famous being the ever popular Langans Brasserie just off Piccadilly.
Sadly, though Peter was an immensely talented man in so many ways - his eye for art was quite superb, and he has left a fabulous collection, much of which adorns the walls of his ex-restaurants - he suffered from the archetypal Irishman's love of the booze. It was not unusual for him to be found comatose beneath one of the tables, having disposed of more bottles of champagne before lunch than most people could consume in a week.
Eventually he tried to set fire to his own house one night, and died as a result. However, he has left a wonderful culinary legacy behind him, and Odin's remains as deservedly popular today, appealing mainly to the crowd who like somewhere that has developed into being slightly establishment.
With its luxurious and comfortable furnishings combined with a fine art collection including various works by 'David Hockney' and 'Patrick Procktor' adorning the walls, you could be forgiven for believing that you are dining in one of London's finest art galleries.
Odin's offers a two or three course set-price menu in the Anglo/French style of cuisine, which includes tempting starters such as 'Toasted English Muffin with Bayonne Ham, Poached Egg & Hollandaise' or 'Steamed Mussels with White Wine & Cream'. Followed by a Main Course such as 'Pan Fried Medallions of Beef with a Green Peppercorn Sauce' or one of their specialities 'Roast Partridge with Bread Sauce & Gravy'.
If you still have room, you could not try one of their choice desserts such as 'Date & Ginger Pudding with Butterscotch Sauce' or the infamous 'Mrs Langan's Chocolate Pudding' then finish off with one of the wide range of Liqueurs and Coffees.
With its many long serving attentive staff and leisurely ambience, Odin's remains unique in London, and provides a perfect location for that romantic meal or relaxed business meeting. Do note that they add a 15% optional service charge to all bills.
