The Traditional English Restaurants of London

Your guide to English restaurants in London

S & M

Notting Hill is an 'in' area of London at the moment, and the most famous feature of it, apart from the annual Carnival, is Portobello Market, renowned the world over, situated in Portobello Road, and attracting avid antique hunters every Saturday.

Recently a unique restaurant opened there, making the British banger, or sausage to most of us, its uncomplicated speciality. They are made for them by Simply Sausages to the very highest standards, containing only the very best cuts of meat and freshly blended seasoning, with no artificial anythings added.

This is not exactly a posh place though, it really couldn't be as it is sited in a slightly insalubrious position underneath the Westway, an elevated motorway. It is more a friendly café with wooden tables and seats, but for a really unusual nosh-up at reasonable prices it has a unique appeal.

There is the odd starter and pudding on offer, but sausages are the 'name of the game' here, with 'sausage mash and gravy' at £7 with three sausages or £5.75 for two. They even cater for vegetarians with a choice of three sausages, from Spinach and Garlic rolled in fresh brown breadcrumbs to Smoked Applewood Cheese rolled in sunflower seeds.

Really starving parties can opt for 'The Desperate Dan'. Desperate Dan is a British comic character (The Dandy), who loves eating Cow Pie, made from a whole animal! Their version offers a huge platter of different mashes, with twelve of the day's sausages and gravies, quite enough for about five people, and a bargain at £25.
