The Traditional English Restaurants of London

Your guide to English restaurants in London

Toff's

Many local inhabitants would claim that this is North London’s premier fish and chip shop, or as some neighbourhood wag once termed it, “Muswell Hill’s sole claim to fame”.

No more piscatorial jokes, as this is not the plaice for it!

Everything is fresh and fried to order, with crisp and grease-free batter, or if you pay £1 extra, then fish can come grilled instead. You can even have a prawn cocktail or avocado to start, and, if you insist on a three-course meal, finish off with with an excellent spotted dick and custard.

It scores well gastronomically in the guides, with far more fans than detractors, and the haddock and chips rates highly. Certain little good touches are noted and appreciated by customers, like the tartare sauce, and wonderful gherkins.

They also have a very popular take-away service, which many customers use, as they don’t actually think that the slightly dated décor is that fantastic!
