The Traditional English Restaurants of London

Your guide to English restaurants in London

The Chelsea Ram

This former pub, sited in a bit of a backwater on the nether reaches of the Chelsea/Fulham borders is deservedly extremely popular and highly regarded both by its clientele and by food writers.

They have recently corrected what used to be viewed as a couple of slight drawbacks, though to its many devoted fans the quality of the fare was always of rather greater importance: firstly, you now can book, and secondly some people used not to be too crazy about their policy over smoking, but they have installed air cleaning machines throughout.

The Zagat Guide 2002 was obviously having a bit of fun when they wrote, “Ewe should make a visit to this World’s End haunt for superb English pub grub and a great local atmosphere (council house meets mega-Sloane); the lack of a non-smoking area gets the goat of some non-smokers, but regulars kid you not when they recommend this casual, friendly neighbourhood venue.”

Unlike some of the modern gastro-pubs, they have very much retained a well patronised bar area, and supply copies of the daily newspapers for their customers to peruse at the same time as they are enjoying their pint.

Though the dishes on their daily changing menu certainly cannot be described as being traditional, they definitely have their roots in our native cuisine, with choices like salmon & haddock fishcakes, sautéed spinach, pancetta and fresh tomato sauce; roast pheasant breast, parisienne potatoes, sprouts, parsnips, chestnuts and thyme jus or pork and leek sausages with herbed mash and onion gravy.

While puddings like fig, walnut and brandy pudding with toffee ice cream; apple and berry crumble & double cream or pears poached in red wine with vanilla ice cream remind you of how tempting English food can be, but that it doesn’t pay to try to count the calories.

The Chelsea Ram gains high praise from all the major London restaurant guides, especially for the fact that it is comforting and relaxing, whilst it also manages to maintain consistently high standards; service though receives a fractionally lower rating.
